A brief description of your career history

I did a number of things including multimedia internships in Tokyo and Hong Kong, dabbled in helping to create a technology focused investment fund, worked on YouTube projects, including the “WINGS” music video for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis in the US, and eventually began scouting talent in Hong Kong.

What makes you ‘now’ in technology?

I use Slack.

What gets you out of bed on a Monday morning?

Coffee.  Always coffee. Iced Americano, black.

What do you see as the next big game changer within the Digital Media and Technology industry?

All Mobile Everything.  I believe the emergence of mobile is one of the biggest game changers we have ever seen, technologically speaking.  Anyone who can leverage habit-forming mobile products (and the data ) will reap rewards handsomely, whether it’s gaming, video content, social media, search, or live streaming: rule the screens, rule the roost.

You call yourself a specialist. Why?

Because it sounds way better than generalist? Actually, it’s not a term I take lightly.  I have a tremendous amount of  respect for those who believe in their craft and continue to improve over a lifetime.  I take pride in learning something new every day.

What is your greatest achievement? (This could be either work or personal)

When I was 17 I received a scholarship to study at a local high school in Fukuoka, Japan.  Everything I did for an entire year was in Japanese and I only spoke to my parents in the US every few weeks.  Every day was challenging, but eventually I got used to it.  The experience was transformative and I have considered myself a global citizen since then (2004).

What is the best thing about your role?

I get to develop personally and professionally in a field that I actually care about.

Who sits next to you in the office?

I sit next to a window.  Sometimes the window cleaner guy is next to me.  Tom Mackintosh sits in front and Vivian Xiang sits behind me.

When you were a child, what did you want to be?

I wanted to be an inventor. I imagined myself in a lab like Tony Stark.

What is your favourite quote?

“To give anything less than your best, is to sacrifice the gift.” –Steve Prefontaine

If you could invite 5 people to dinner who would they be?

Elon Musk (Tony Stark IRL), Jon Foreman (musician), Jad Abumrad (WYNC’s Radiolab), Sundar Pichai (CEO of Google), Marc Andreessen (Venture Capitalist)
