AAN & Xpand Meet-Ups: DevOps

10th Aug 2015

What does DevOps really mean?

The Australasian Architecture next work and Xpand are excited to present our first event of the new financial year, to be centred on the hugely topical realm of DevOpps. The event hosted by Xpand’s Client Services Director for Technology; Andrew Blades, will be kicking off this Thursday the 13th of August in our Xpand’s Millers Point HQ with the Melbourne episode to be held the following Thursday the 20th of August.

DevOps is quite a divisive topic on which everyone seems to have a differing perspective. It is for this reason that AAN & Xpand have chosen this as a focus of conversation, and also for its enormous relevance and the obvious need for better understanding and clarification of what DevOps really means.

Generally speaking DevOps is regarded as an emerging trend which sees the convergence of development engineers and operations teams working together throughout the entire lifecycle of a service; via the application of a trimmed down and more agile approach to IT Operations. Our aim for the evening is to achieve even further elucidation via a Q & A with our industry expert panellists who will be able to delve deeply into these ideas and answer all your questions, hopefully allowing us to achieve a uniformed consensus on what DevOps really is.

The first of our enlightening DevOps Sydney panellists will be Yann Krätzschmann, Cloud Solutions Practice Lead at Bulletproof;

With clients including, Network TEN, Sydney Airport, Racing Victoria, Moshtix and, Bulletproof (ASX:BPF) is Australia’s leading end-to-end mission critical Cloud Services and Managed Cloud Services provider.

As Cloud Solutions Practice Lead Yann supports the business development and account managers during the pre-sales stage by investigating and defining technical solutions and estimating rough efforts for implementation and leads initial solution designs for overall application, ensuring designs fit the client and practice requirements and standards.

He is responsible for implementing solutions, in particular backend infrastructure (AWS mostly, Azure and GCE basics) and supports practice members in all projects with other participating parties like developers and solution architects and works very Agile (SCRUM / Kanban) oriented environments, and shares that knowledge with Bulletproof customers.

Yann oversees and reviews implemented solutions by engineers cross practices and ensures every solution is: scalable, replicable (via automation), incorporates tests driven development and overall re-usability for future needs. Working with business owners on the client side in defining solution architecture and project management principles he also supports account managers, projects managed and business analysts during project initiation phase up to the last phase of operational handover.

Our second expert panellist is Cara Crawford, Development and Delivery Manager at AMP;

Cara is an ex-developer who thought there had to be a better way to do production support.  She constantly changelled the way production support and operations worked with development teams with a focus on making everyone's lives easier from development environments, centralised configurations to quicker non-discruptive deployments in production envrironments.

And our final panellist of the evening is Andrew Khoury, who is a Senior DevOps Engineer at Odecee;

With only 10 years experience Andrew Khoury has an impressive career for a 30 year old. His background spans development, support and operations as well as automation. Andrew has been lucky enough to work with all sorts of organisations, from enterprise to digital/advertising agencies and open-source projects.

An AWS Solutions Architect, Andrew is passionate about solving problems. With industry experience in the cloud (AWS, Google) and automation (Puppet) Andrew isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. Andrew is passionate about automation, networking and security.

Currently working as a Senior DevOps Engineer at Odecee Andrew plays a vital role in creating solutions for enterprise customers who need help automating systems and migrating to the cloud.

We did have another panellist for the evening; Aron Campbell, Manager of IT Infrastructure Solutions & Devops at ING Direct who had to pull out unfortunately, but we are looking forward to seeing him at the next event instead.

As you can see our panellists are all expectional and their expertise has drawn a crowd as our Sydney event has already reached its capacity, but for those that have already RSVP’d we’re looking forward to seeing you there for drinks, pizza (on us) and networking from 6pm, with our exciting DevOps focused Q & A to follow!

If you’re based in Melbourne and are interested in attending this chapter to be held on the 20th of August, then please RSVP via the link below ASAP as places are limited. We have another group of incredible panellists for this event to be anounced soon, so stay tuned.

We look forward to seeing all of those who are in attendance!
